National Influenza Vaccination Week
This week is National Influenza Vaccination Week. This year the focus is on H1N1 influenza (swine flu) vaccines. Although this vaccine was initially only available in limited quantities to a few high risk groups, more vaccine is now available and all groups are being encouraged to get vaccinated.
I got my H1N1 flu shot yesterday and have heard from several teachers and families that they have gotten or are planning to get this vaccine. Getting vaccinated not only protects you from illness, but also prevents you from spreading flu to those around you. This is especially important in protecting those at particularly high risk; infants and young children, pregnant women, people with conditions such as asthma and heart disease, and people with weakened immune systems.
Since the vaccine is more readily available now, many doctors’ offices that were not able to offer it earlier are able to give this vaccine now. Also, some retail pharmacies, such as those at drug or grocery stores, are now offering this vaccine. The Santa Clara County Public Health Department is also offering the vaccine by appointment. The vaccine is free, although some providers may charge for administering it.
You may have seen in the news that there have been fewer cases of flu in the last several weeks. However, H1N1 flu is still causing illness, and it is impossible to predict if another wave of illness is coming. If you have not gotten vaccinated yet, I encourage you to do so to protect yourself and your loved ones from this potentially serious illness.
